Bookmark Synchronization
Xmarks automatically synchronizes any of your bookmarks across all your browsers, computers, smartphones and tablets. Install it on every supported device that you use and it will work seamlessly in the background.
By default Xmarks’ auto-sync is enabled. To change your auto-sync settings:
- Click the Xmarks icon on the browser toolbar.
- Xmarks Settings will appear.
- Select the “Sync” tab.
- Under “Synchronization Options”, you can enabled or disable automatic synchronization.
- Click “OK” to save your change.
For Internet Explorer:
- Click the Xmarks icon in the system tray.
- Xmarks Settings will appear.
- Under ‘Synchronization Settings”, you can enable or disable automatic synchronization.
- Click “Close” to save and exit.
In Firefox only, under “Synchronization Options” you can choose to enable (or disable) “Sync on Shutdown” to ensure your data is synced before closing your browser. You can sync history in addition to bookmarks and open tabs. Both features are not currently available on other browsers.
- Click the Xmarks icon on your browser toolbar or in system tray (Xmarks for IE) or on status menu on OS X (Xmarks for Safari)
- Click “Synchronize Now” on the menu
Upload Bookmarks
To force upload changes from your local bookmark set to your server bookmark set:
- Click the Xmarks icon.
- Xmarks Settings will appear.
- Select “Advanced” – In IE, this is a button. In all other browsers, this is a tab.
- Click “Upload”.
- Select “OK” in the pop-up message to confirm the upload.
- The Xmarks Status screen will appear to display the upload and disappear once the upload is complete. Some might also see a “Synchronization Complete” confirmation.
*Note that with an upload, your local bookmarks will completely replace your server bookmarks.
Downloading Bookmarks
To force download changes from your server bookmark set to your local bookmark set:
- Click the Xmarks icon.
- Xmarks Settings will appear.
- Select “Advanced” – In IE, this is a button. In all other browsers, this is a tab.
- Click “Download”.
- Select “OK” in the pop-up message to confirm the download.
- The Xmarks Status screen will appear to display the download and disappear once the download is complete. Some might also see a “Synchronization Complete” confirmation.
*Note that with a download, your server bookmarks will completely replace your local bookmarks.
Repair Bookmarks
To force download changes from your server bookmark set to your local bookmark set while still preserving your unsynced local bookmarks:
- Click the Xmarks icon.
- Xmarks Settings will appear. On Safari the option is called Xmarks for Safari Settings.
- Select “Advanced” – In IE, this is a button. In all other browser, this is a tab.
- Click “Repair”.
- Select “OK” in the pop- up message to confirm the repair.
- The Xmarks Status screen will appear to display the repair and disappear once the repair is complete. Some might also see a “Synchronization Complete” confirmation.
A sync should always follow a repair: Xmarks icon > Synchronize Now.
In Safari, repair is located under the “Help” tab.
